In-Detention
Yoga, Meditation, Breathwork, Sound Bath
Woosaa Wellness averages 28 hours of The Woo Way programming per week on Riker’s Island, in Queen’s NY, in the housing units at every facility, as well as 10 hours per week on the basketball court at GRVC, OBCC and West Facility.
We run 16 hours per week of programming in Crossroads Juvenile Center in Brooklyn, NY and Horizons Juvenile Center in the Bronx, NY for Administration for Children’s Services (ACS).
Recognized by the Department of Corrections (DOC) for outstanding performance, our organization has become a fixture for wellness programming across all divisions — uniformed and non-uniformed — within the department.
Our programs reach roughly 270 people in custody per week on Riker’s Island and 144 youth in custody at NYC juvenile centers.
Basketball Programming x Mixing Gangs
A fortuitous consequence of the Woo Way Basketball programming on Riker’s Island for young adults (18-21) has been the authentic bonds formed spontaneously between participants of different ages, races and ethnicities, and, most unpredictably, even opposing gang members (whose rivalries often have fatal implications in-detention and inner-city neighborhoods) – in the name of achieving a shared goal of skill development, game preparation, play.
On Riker’s, we’ve watched rivalries dissolve through the context of the somatic self-regulation and self-development techniques in The Woo Way programming and court-time, and seen participants of rival gangs continue to develop these relationships outside of program-time that becomes a safe space to express vulnerability, sustaining as emotional-life-lines even after they re-enter society.
Observing our participants rejecting street-code foundational to neighborhood division, violence, and crime that perpetuates broken communities, failure of youth to thrive, and recidivism, gives us great hope for a brighter future for each participant as well as healthier, compassionate and collaborative inner city communities.
Referee Training Program
Woosaa’s Referee Training Program (RTP) is committed to supporting youth and young adults in secure detention to develop life skills, step into leadership positions, and experience professional pathways through the lens of basketball officiating.
RTP training is a 6-week workforce development program specifically tailored for youth in secure juvenile detention. Participants will gain the knowledge, confidence, and technical ability required to become certified basketball officials with a focus on communication, professionalism, and critical thinking under pressure.
All-Star Games &Tournament
In 2019, Woosaa began offering mixed-gang all-star week basketball programming during winter recess. Since then, Woosaa has supported 30+ residents-vs-staff, residents-vs-residents, and games with external teams coming into the jail, all without incidents, helping to shift the culture of segregation inside juvenile detention.
External teams have been composed of current and former collegiate ballers, youth from NYC prep schools volunteering towards community service initiative, Young Leaders from Steady Buckets, and other young adults from the Bronx who have pursued basketball competitively.
